Like any other wireless system, a wireless router gives you freedom to free the valuable workspace from the tangling wires. Technically speaking, a wireless router is a special network router that connects different workstations wirelessly and routes network traffic between workstations and an existing Internet connection. Some of the wireless routers are actually wired routers with wireless access points built in so you can have wired and/or wireless at the same time. Another choice is a wireless router with a built-in DSL or cable modem. You can also consider a hardware & software security combo box to connect and protect your home network or office network. The wireless router is capable of sharing Internet connections amongst several computers via 802.3 Ethernet and 802.11b/g wireless data links.

This gives wireless users the same ability as wired users to send and receive packets over multiple networks. Read the rest of this entry »

Movie downloads are great…if you want to watch them on your PC, that is. Transferring that content to a DVD should offer a simpler solution, but copy protection schemes have made it a legal headache—especially for retailers who want to allow their customers to browse content digitally and burn their own DVD right in the store.
While the idea of direct-to-DVD downloads has been tossed around for years—and a few other products are in the works—your only (legal) option, for now, is the Dell Qflix DVD Burner. This $120 drive allows you to burn copies of DRM-protected downloads so that you can watch away from your PC. It works as advertised, but right now its appeal is pretty limited. Take a look around and it’s hard not to get depressed by all the negative economic news. Home prices keep sliding. Credit is drying up. Inflation fears are on the rise. And consumer confidence is lower than it’s been since the early 1990s.
You would think all of this would eat into the business at Apple (AAPL). The company’s computers tend to be pricier than those from Dell (DELL) or Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), while its iPods and iPhones are the sort of discretionary purchases that consumers often cut out during an economic slowdown.
Paul Kedrosky thinks Apple is about to take a hit from the slowing economy. The Kauffman Foundation senior fellow who edits the business and economics blog Infectious Greed recently argued on Yahoo’s (YHOO) Tech Ticker that since Apple’s products are “aspirational,” consumers can do without them and opt instead for cheaper alternatives from others, or bypass electronics purchases altogether. He’s expecting Apple to miss its earnings targets for the current quarter and to lower its outlook for the quarter after that. Read the rest of this entry »
