Nokia N96 a Fashionable Cellphone

Being a successor of the Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N96 has some king-size spec sheet to top and it can’t be accused of not trying. There’s FP2, double the built-in storage and DVB-H. The bloodline is strong but the crown is heavy and ancestral sins will be held against the heir twofold. The modest battery capacity and the downgraded CPU do raise some questions that need their answers. Join us for an out-and-out review of Nokia’s latest top-of-the-shelf offer. Let’s see if it has got the performance to walk in them shoes size N95.
Nokia N96 comes to top the Nokia multimedia portfolio, packing almost every single feature you can think of. It extends the functionality of its predecessor – Nokia N95 8GB with 16GB of internal memory, DVB-H TV receiver, and the latest version of the Symbian OS. There are also some more minor upgrades including music keys on the front panel, a kickstand (we love that one) for more comfortable video watching, Navi wheel and dual-LED flash. On the negative side, the CPU has been tripped up but we are yet to see how this affects the performance.

Probably the most obvious alternative to Nokia N96 is Samsung i8510 INNOV8. It trades the DVB-H receiver for an 8 megapixel camera with lens cover, DivX support, DNSe audio technology, and a juicier battery. It also sports an optical joystick, which rocks for browsing. The Innov8 however is slightly more expensive than N96 and it lacks the complimentary stuff (Nokia Maps, 3 months of voice navigation, a free N-gage game and the Transformers movie).

Blackberry Storm 9530

After tons of info leaked already, the Blackberry Storm finally got the official treatment. It will be sold exclusively by Vodafone in Europe and Verizon Wireless in the US. Telius in Canada will also be pushing the device to local customers.

The Blackberry Storm is the first touchscreen device by BlackBerry. It’s got a spanking new user interface, which as it seems is fluid enough to compete the Apple iPhone with an ease. We already showed you the first official images of the device and its user interface and we even topped that with a Vodafone commercial video yesterday.

Now that the Blackberry Storm is finally announced and the specs are all clear, it turns out that it doesn’t pack Wi-Fi functionality as rumored. The Blackberry Storm 9500 will be sold through Vodafone networks and will be free on monthly plans of 35 GBP and up with an 18-month contract.

The Blackberry Storm 9530 is the variant of the handset that will be sold in North America. Along with the quad-band GSM and 2100Mhz UMTS support that the 9500 model has, it will also offer CDMA2000 1xEV-DO support. The Blackberry Storm is not yet available for purchase, but it should be soon.

T-Mobile G1 vs. Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 – No Clear Winner

Many of you will agree that Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and the T-Mobile G1 – the first smartphone to run on Google’s Android platform – are two of the most expected mobile devices of 2008. The handsets also have about the same target, since they’re both touchscreen enabled and come with full QWERTY keyboards.

So it’s kind of obvious that there will be lots of users who might find it difficult to chose between the two – supposing that we’re talking about users in need of high-end QWERTY-equipped smartphones, of course. Luckily, a side-by-side set of photos with the G1 and the X1 has recently appeared on the Dutch website JouwMobiel, so now we can easily see the main differences between them.

It’s worth noting that, although the G1 and the X1 come under different brands, they are actually built by the same manufacturer – HTC, the Taiwanese company that has sealed production agreements with both Sony Ericsson and T-Mobile/Google. At a first glance, the G1 looks kind of cheap when standing besides the elegant Xperia X1, and it’s also a bit bigger. Thus, when it comes to design, the latter smartphone scores higher. But the design is far from being all in a mobile device, so let’s run over the features of the two handsets.
