NEC N704i, with One Month Lasting Battery

NEC has recently announced the launch of the N704i mobile phone model on the Japanese market. This is the world’s slimmest W-CDMA clamshell handset to come packed with 3G performances too.

NEC N704i is the successor of the N703i phone
model and comes at a thickness of only 11.4 mm, thus earning a leading place among the most compact such devices out there. Moreover, it is highly comfortable to use and carry around, as it weighs a mere 90 grams.

The design is somewhat similar to other mobile phones available in Japan, which never make it outside the country. NEC N704i has a rectangular look, with no curved lines, but rather practical ones, with a smooth finish.

One more interesting aspect about it is that the handset is capable of a bright and colorful Led display of graphics and letters on the top casing, instead of an old-fashioned display screen. Moreover, the coasting is highly fashionable, with its stereoscopic patterns showing on the flat casing surface.

NEC N704i holds even more features to impress potential buyers. Its battery has a life of almost one month, depending on how the owner uses it. That makes it one of the longest-lasting batteries in the 3G FOMA series. It takes care of a lot of problems and running out of cell phone battery is not at all the kind of excuse the handset’s user will bring.

The handset also includes a 1.3 megapixel camera for taking captures at a quality below average. The fact that it is also 3G enabled offers the possibility of placing video calls. For this performance, there is also a secondary camera, visible when the clamshell is opened.

NEC N704i will be available from now on at NTT DoCoMo in Japan, with very few chances to see it reach markets outside this country.

Japan Safety Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Japan’s government has recently decided to renew the safety standard for lithium ion batteries at a more constraining level. The reason for this action is the large number of accidents caused by malfunctioning batteries.

Mobile phone batteries of low quality can prove to be extremely dangerous. Even important
leading producers have experienced problems with this type of products, but the main problem has always been the large number of counterfeit batteries that do not respect the safety standards.

Almost 10 million lithium ion batteries were recalled by Sony last year. The main issue was connected with the notebooks using these products. The problem persisted, as a recent report has showed the fact that more than 45 million batteries have been put on recall because overheating problems have occurred.

Batteries Based on Lithium-ion Cells Are Dangerous

Lithium-ion cells are very popular when it comes to producing batteries for cell phones and mobile computing systems as the technology behind them allows manufacturers to create batteries with quite a long functioning time per charge and the production price is lower than in the case of other technologies. But it looks like the very technology behind the batteries based on lithium-ion cells is dangerous as it has already been proven by numerous accidents and laptop and cell phone battery recalls.

According
to a news site that cites a number of Japanese experts like Masataka Wakihara from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, who is a governmental advisor concerning battery safety, the way laptop and cell phone batteries are made must by changed so the end product will be a more secure and robust battery for every day use. According to Kuniaki Tatsumi from theNational Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, who is specialized in battery related research, “companies are less cautious about designing batteries with a focus on safety”. Among the major manufacturers and vendors of lithium-ion cell based batteries there are two Japanese companies and one of them is Sony that entered this market in 1992. “Battery companies are still learning because the technology is young, but there is a fundamental flaw with the way lithium-ion batteries are currently designed and if the companies genuinely care about safety, they need to completely change their production methods. A lithium-ion battery is quite a dangerous little box of energy,” Professor Wakihara said.
